Welcome to the health room! My name is Ashley Lewis, and I'm the registered nurse at Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School. After graduating from East Carolina University in May 2006 with my BSN, I worked on the Progressive Care Unit at Lenoir Memorial Hospital for five years. I've been the school nurse at VFL for the past five years and have thoroughly enjoyed being here. Also, I received my National School Nurse Certification in August 2013. I love to travel, clog, and spend time with my family and friends.

According to the National Association of School Nurses, " School Nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, School Nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self management, self advocacy and learning."
Important Reminder Regarding the School Policy for Fevers, Vomiting, and Diarrhea
If your child is sent home with a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, he is to remain out of school until he is free from fever, vomiting, or diarrhea for at least 24 hours without using fever reducing medications. If your child has any of the above issues, DO NOT send him to school. For example, if your child vomits at 7pm in the evening, he is NOT to come to school the next day. If your child is sent home with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, he is NOT to come to school the next day. He has not been free from the symptoms for a full 24 hours. It is most important to follow this policy. Viruses and other illness spread quickly. In order to help prevent the spread of germs from student to student, it is imperative that you KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME if he is sick. Also, if antibiotics have been prescribed, they should be taken for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
